New food labeling rules aim to better inform consumers about added sugar

The FDA has announced a new food labeling rule requiring all food manufacturers to disclose the amount of added sugar in their products. The move is aimed at giving consumers a better understanding of how much added sugar they are consuming and how it affects their health.

The new rules will require food manufacturers to list the amount of added sugar in grams and the percentage of the recommended daily intake on food nutrition labels. While labels always list the total sugar content of a food, they don't distinguish added sugar from natural sugar.

The American Heart Association recommends that women consume no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day, while men should stick to no more than 9 teaspoons. However, studies show that the average American consumes about 22 teaspoons of added sugar per day, which contributes to health problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

While critics claim the new labeling rules will lead to increased spending by food manufacturers, others see it as a necessary step in providing better health education to consumers. The new labels will begin appearing on food products on July 26, 2018.
